# Cheap Multivitamin vs Expensive Multivitamin: What 'Chelated' and 'Methylated' Actually Buy You

Multivitamins range from under ₹200 to over ₹2,000 for a month's supply. Two terms drive a large share of that price difference: **chelated** minerals and **methylated** vitamins. This article explains what those words mean for your body and when paying more is genuinely worth it.

---

## What 'Chelated' Means for Minerals

Chelation bonds a mineral to an organic molecule, usually an amino acid, to improve gut absorption. Common chelated minerals on labels include:

- **Magnesium glycinate** (magnesium bonded to glycine)
- **Zinc bisglycinate** (zinc bonded to two glycine molecules)
- **Iron bisglycinate** (iron bonded to glycine)
- **Copper bisglycinate**

Cheap multivitamins typically use **oxide or sulfate forms**. Magnesium oxide is inexpensive to manufacture but has lower absorption than magnesium glycinate. Zinc oxide is similarly less bioavailable than zinc bisglycinate.

If the gut absorbs less of a mineral, a higher dose is needed for the same effect. Higher doses of poorly absorbed minerals are more likely to cause digestive side effects such as nausea or loose stools. Chelated forms tend to be gentler on the stomach and more efficiently used at lower doses.

**When chelated forms matter most:**
- You have a diagnosed deficiency and need reliable repletion
- You have a sensitive digestive system
- You are taking a mineral at a therapeutic dose rather than a maintenance dose

**When the cheaper form is probably fine:**
- You eat a varied diet and use a multivitamin as a general top-up
- The mineral is present at a low dose where absorption differences are less clinically significant

## What 'Methylated' Means for B Vitamins

Methylation refers to the form of certain B vitamins, particularly B12 and folate (B9).

**Standard cheap forms:**
- Cyanocobalamin (B12)
- Folic acid (folate)

**Premium methylated forms:**
- Methylcobalamin (B12)
- Methylfolate, also written as 5-MTHF or L-methylfolate (folate)

The reason this matters is a genetic variant called **MTHFR**. People who carry certain MTHFR variants have reduced ability to convert folic acid and cyanocobalamin into the active forms the body uses. A meaningful portion of the population carries at least one copy of a relevant MTHFR variant, though the degree of impact varies.

For people without MTHFR variants, the body converts folic acid and cyanocobalamin reasonably well, so cheaper forms work adequately for most purposes. For people with MTHFR variants, or for anyone who wants to skip the conversion step, methylated forms deliver the active nutrient directly.

Methylcobalamin is also generally considered to have better retention in the body compared to cyanocobalamin, which is excreted more quickly.

**When methylated B vitamins matter most:**
- You have tested positive for an MTHFR variant
- You have a history of elevated homocysteine
- You are pregnant or planning pregnancy (methylfolate bypasses conversion uncertainty)
- You have had poor results with standard B12 supplementation

**When standard forms are likely sufficient:**
- You have no known MTHFR variant and eat a diet with reasonable B vitamin content
- You are using a multivitamin for general nutritional insurance rather than addressing a specific deficiency

---

## Other Factors That Drive Price

Chelation and methylation are the two most substantive reasons a multivitamin costs more, but other contributors include:

| Factor | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| **Vitamin D3 vs D2** | D3 (cholecalciferol) raises blood levels more effectively than D2 (ergocalciferol). Most premium formulas use D3. |
| **K2 as MK-7 vs MK-4** | MK-7 has a longer half-life in the body. Cheap formulas often omit K2 entirely or use MK-4 at low doses. |
| **Dose accuracy and third-party testing** | Premium brands are more likely to test finished products to verify that label claims match actual content. |
| **Capsule vs tablet** | Capsules, especially vegetable capsules, often dissolve more reliably than compressed tablets, which can pass through the gut partially intact. |
| **Fillers and binders** | Budget tablets often contain more excipients. This rarely affects efficacy but matters to buyers with sensitivities. |

## A Practical Decision Framework

Before spending more on a premium multivitamin, ask these questions:

1. **Do you have a confirmed deficiency or a known MTHFR variant?** If yes, upgraded forms are worth the cost. If no, a mid-range formula with D3 and reasonable mineral doses is likely adequate.

2. **What dose of each mineral is actually in the formula?** A chelated mineral at a trivially small dose (for example, 5 mg of magnesium glycinate) offers little practical advantage over a cheap form at the same dose. Check the label for amounts, not just form names.

3. **Is the product tested for label accuracy?** Look for a certificate of analysis or quality verification on the product page. This matters more than the form of any single ingredient.

4. **Are you buying to cover genuine gaps, or because of marketing?** If your diet is already varied and you are not in a high-demand life stage (pregnancy, intense training, recovery from illness), a basic formula covering the main micronutrients is often enough.

## Summary

- Chelated minerals and methylated B vitamins are not marketing fiction. They represent genuinely more bioavailable forms of nutrients.
- For buyers with absorption issues, MTHFR variants, deficiencies, or high physiological demand, these forms make a real difference.
- For the average healthy adult using a multivitamin as a dietary top-up, the gap between a well-formulated mid-range product and a premium chelated formula is smaller than the price difference suggests.
- Read the actual ingredient form and dose on the label, not just the brand name or price. A ₹400 multivitamin with D3, zinc bisglycinate, and methylfolate will outperform a ₹1,500 product that uses oxide minerals and folic acid at inflated doses.
